SPAN 360:
Workshop in Latin American Performance Experience
El triunfo de Isis
Creación colectiva
This is an experiential class in which students explore their bodies and
minds in order to understand the difficulties involved in staging a text (poem,
play, short story, an idea). While
students practice Spanish during rehearsals, they also explore Latin American
perspectives and techniques production (from acting to performance).
Collaborative
theatre (collective creativity) is a methodology that developed in New Latin
American Theatre during the 1960s.
In general, collaborative theatre uses text as a basis for
improvisation. During improvisation performers discover specific situations,
characters, and locations. It is
from this process that the actors discover the specific text to perform. The difference between collaborative
theatre and traditional theatre is that traditional theatre uses a fixed
dramatic text written by one author, whereas collaborative theatre uses a text
discovered via improvisation and created by many authors. This type of text is both dramatic and
imagistic. In the collective
theatre there is not one main actor, but many since the imagistic theatre
requires multiple approaches. Many
of the groups that perform in Latin America work in this way due to financial
restrictions. However, the theatre
of the poor is not a poor theatre.
It is rich in imaginative possibilities due to the visual richness of
this alternative process. The
collaborative theatre is not based on a star system. Rather the methodology of the New Latin American Theatre
requires a work ethic based on collaboration, solidarity, and mutual respect.
Isis, goddess of Nature, with her veiled
body and her chest with multiple breasts, presides
over what is born. In a Promethean effort, humans have torn at
her veils to know her secrets, constantly violating her domain. But in
this sometimes uncanny game, Isis will have the final say, as
she also presides over what will die. She has charged mankind with the
death drive, making them violent towards one another—thus leaving them to their
mutual destruction.
